Your questions and concerns always matter

Questions, concerns, feedback, or reports of inappropriate behavior are always welcome. If something is bothering you, please contact a GM, or email contact@FateDefiedGuild.com. We want this community to be a safe and enjoyable place for everyone.

PvP

PvP will not be allowed during sessions. This includes direct combat or using skill checks to take away another character's/player's agency. Players are encouraged to roleplay with other players to settle differences during sessions, but ultimately each player is entitled to their own decisions and if an agreement cannot be reached, the characters should stop/table the dispute or the DM will keep the story moving forward.

In the event your character and another character would like to work through disagreements through combat, they can agree to a 1v1 fight at The Pit, or in The Crown's Crucible.

Romance

Romance and character relationships are permitted as long as all parties consent to this type of content. Intimate moments will be narrated as "fade to black."

Harassment or non-consensual roleplay will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Violations may result in player removal from sessions. Continued violations may result in player removal from future gameplay.

Alignments

Evil characters will not be permitted.

Leveling

Characters will gain levels by earning XP.

Currency

In-game currency will be limited to gold pieces for simplified gameplay.

The DMs Role in Gameplay

The DMs role is to tell a story, manage session time, mediate players, and referee gameplay.

The DMs role is NOT to "win" the game. This is not a DM vs. player situation. The DMs are there to provide an overall positive experience for players.

New Characters

All new characters must be pre-approved by a DM before joining a session.

What is the tone of the sessions offered?

The tone of the overall story is serious, with a focus on surviving a dangerous world. Players are, however, encouraged to ease the feeling of a constant impending threat with hopeful demeanors and comedic relief if desired.

Is this a "sandbox" campaign?

Each session will be a linear quest/mission. The goal will be to complete the story in one session, and the outcome will drive the overall story of the world forward. With that in mind, part of the DMs role will be to keep players on track to complete the sessions' goals.

If there is something your character would like to do that seems outside of the current mission, or something you would like to do/see in the world, share your ideas with your DM! Inspiration comes from everywhere, and players are often the source of some of the best ideas. You can also submit your ideas and requests here.

Why does my character care? Why am I working with these people?

Your character's motivation is for you to decide. However, there is a set of purposes all characters have in common: defending Aurelith and its people, protecting your fellow guild members, and earning rewards and rank in Fate Defied. Every character should feel SOME stake in the outcome of the city.

Other possible motivations?

  • You have friends/family in the city and cannot keep them safe alone.

  • You're attempting to earn enough gold to accomplish another goal, like opening that bookstore you've always dreamt of.

  • You're fascinated by the incomplete history of Aurelith and The Forsworn Wilds and want to discover all you can about it.

  • Your arcane mentor insists you practice your craft in real-world applications.

  • Etc., etc.

Examples of motivations that should be avoided:

  • Creating chaos.

  • Killing players/NPCs you don't like.

  • You get the idea...

Can my character die? Like, PERMANENTLY??

Short answer, yes. The Forsworn Wilds are a dangerous and unforgiving place.

BUT there is a way to save your character, should they fall during a mission. The Hall of Grace will resurrect characters so long as the character has donated 1200g to the Hall of Grace and received a Writ of Resurrection, which entitles the character to a resurrection, assuming their body is brought to the Hall.

A note to new players: character death is uncommon. There are opportunities to save a character that has fallen to 0 hit points, like potions, medicine checks, healing kits, and even the lower-level revivify spell.

What if I don't want to roleplay my character at the table? I don't know if I want to do voices or act things out.

Well, first, do you not LIKE roleplay, or is there some other reason?

If you don't like roleplay as much as other aspects of the game, you can keep it minimal. But D&D is a collaborative game so there will always be an aspect of interaction between characters and/or NPCs.

If you're nervous or just don't know how, I would just say try it! It may take a few sessions, but most people start to feel more comfortable acting as their character the more they play. There are lots of resources and videos online that share tips for new role-players in TTRPGs that can help, too. If you don't want to do voices, that's ok! You can just use your own voice to speak as your character, or say things like, "My character asks the herbalist if the plant is poisonous." (This works for character speech and actions.)

Still not sure or have questions? Talk with your fellow players (since we've all been there), talk with your DM, or email contact@FateDefiedGuild.com. We're here to help.

Homebrew Rules

Potions:

  • Using a potion in combat = bonus action.

  • Handing a potion to an ally = free-action.

  • Giving a potion to an unconscious ally = action.

Changing weapons in combat is a free-action.

Targeted strikes (ex: "I shoot him in the eye with my bow!") will be at disadvantage, but successes will have possible benefits (ex: "The creature now has disadvantage on perception checks involving sight, so that should help your rogue friend with hiding!")

Critical hit damage = max dice damage + dice roll + modifier. (Ex: a critical hit with a greatsword [2d6 slashing damage]: 12 [total possible on dice] + 4 [2d6 rolled] + 3 [str mod] = 19 slashing damage.)

Weapons with the Loading feature do not limit multi attack features.

In-game currency will be limited to gold only to simplify gameplay.

Food and water will not be tracked by the DMs. (Feel free to add eating and drinking flavor to your roleplay, but for the purposes of the rules, it will be assumed that players will have needed provisions from the guild.) If you would like to track your OWN food and water consumption to add difficulty to your own game, you're welcome to.

Every guild member will be provided a bed and trunk with a lock to store excess items.
